McGuinty reviews power usage rates

TORONTO, Ont. – Many Ontarians have been limiting their power usage toward off-peak hours, leaving domestic duties to the evening or late night hours. However, many claim the savings are minimal, seeing increases, not decreases, in their bills.
Shifting the times big appliances are used is supposed to save money on the electricity bill, but smart meters have proven to be unpopular, and Ontario is letting their government know.
Premier Dalton McGuinty said his government will review the rates.
“We’re going to motivate people, we’re going to inspire them to do things at unusual times, not in keeping with their usual habits, then we have got to make sure there is a real incentive there,” he said.
NDP leader, Andrea Horwath, said the smart meter plan makes e-health look like a bargain.
“We have a scheme that leaves 80 per cent of the people paying higher rates, doesn’t conserve energy, and has left Ontario families on the hook for $1.5-billion dollars.”
The Conservatives blame the HST and the Liberals’ green energy policies for the increases.
