New Limits To Driveway Parking In Effect

A new Toronto bylaw in effect this month restricts how many cars residents can park in their driveways.

Part of the harmonized zoning bylaw combining regulations from former GTA municipalities, the law was passed by council in August.

Going forward, people with a single car garage can only park one vehicle in the garage and another in the driveway. For double garages, two cars are allowed in the garage and two in the driveway.

People can build no more than two parking stalls in their backyards.

City officials say they won’t crack down on the average homeowner – the bylaw is there merely to clear out cluttered front yards.

Offenders could end up in court and face a fine of up to $5,000.

The new law has already been appealed and will be reviewed by the Ontario Municipal Board.
