“Priscilla, Queen of the Desert” opens with a bang

TORONTO, Ont. – Priscilla, Queen of the Desert opened in style at the Princess of Whales theatre, Tuesday night.

680’s Showbiz Editor Gloria Martin took in all the red carpet action … or rather, pink carpet action, as the cast and crew entered the theatre.

Once inside, the audience jumped to their feet with glee as the eye-popping extravaganza opened its Toronto run. The big musical numbers combined Busby Berkley with La Cage aux Folles in the story of three drag queens who drive a pink bus across the Australian desert.

Although everything about the show is over the top, at the heart of it is a touching story about love and acceptance.

The opening night crowd included Karen Kain, Fiona Reid, Rex Harrington, Patrick Watson, Sandra Shamas and Darryl Sittler.

Even former mayoral candidates Joe Pantalone, and George Smitherman and husband Christopher Peloso were in attendance, and walked the pink carpet prior to the show.

Priscilla is in Toronto until November 28, in advance of its Broadway run next spring.
