The father of two little girls who were drowned in a bathtub by their mother said he will forever be haunted by that image.
Leo Campione was not in court, Wednesday, but a Crown attorney read his victim impact statement.
Elaine Campione, 35, was found guilty on Monday of two counts of first-degree murder for killing her daughters Serena, 3, and 19-month-old Sophia. She faces life in prison without parole for 25 years.
She drowned her daughters in 2006 in the middle of a custody battle with her ex-husband.
Leo said he misses seeing his daughters run towards him, yelling “daddy, daddy.”
The Campione family also released their own statement. Citytv reporter Avery Haines was in the courtroom and told 680News what they had to say.
“[The family said], ‘our time with them was cut short, our hearts broken, our hearts shattered’,” Haines reported.
“And they go on to say that the ’emptiness of losing Serena and Sophia is something we live with every day’.”
The Crown attorney had this to share: “Our thoughts are with the family of Serena and Sophia who will continue to deal with their grievous loss long after the trial has completed.”
He says the case has affected the whole community, “It’s our hope that the wounds can begin to heal now that the trial is over.”
In July, Elaine Campione had her husband charged with assault, claiming he hit her and their older daughter. Those charges were stayed and are not longer being investigated.
