With so much being made of a few athletes returning to former stomping grounds Thursday night, we look at the Top 10 Greatest Returns of all-time …
10. The McRib
It’s hard to imagine why McDonald’s would ever get rid of a boneless pork patty dressed with fresh-slivered onions, dill pickle slices and tangy barbeque sauce that is served on a toasted, golden-brown, home-style bun. But for some reason, the folks behind the Golden Arches always unleash this flavour-packed phenomenon on a limited-time offer before ripping it out of our sauce-covered hands. It makes us angry every time … until it returns and then we forgive them again.
9. December 2, 2010 in Cleveland
On Thursday night, the Cavaliers welcome home the man who is the franchise leader in games played, rebounds and blocks and second all-time in points scored. Needless to say, it will be an emotional night for Zydrunas Ilgauskas. Now a member of the Miami Heat, Big Z is no stranger to returning to Cleveland. After the Cavs traded Ilgauskas to Washington last February, the Wizards released the centre which allowed him to sign a one-year deal back in Cleveland. He received a massive ovation in his first game back with the team, but Thursday night will be the first time he plays against the Cavs. We’re expecting fireworks.
8. Devin Hester at Super Bowl XLI
7. The Jedi
That noise you hear is the sound of nerds across the globe knocking over the faux-potted plant in their parent’s basement out of anger because Return of the Jedi only made No. 7 on our list. The enjoyment ADB gets out of that is the sole reason it’s not higher on our list. A peace offering for angry Star Wars nerds.
6. Return it in bulk
For anyone who has ever purchased an item with the intention of taking it back knows very well that Costco offers the best return policies on the planet. Family won’t touch that tire-sized fruit cake sitting on the counter? No problem. At Costco, there is no time limit on returns if you have a valid receipt.
5. The Mack
4. Going Hollywood
To wrestling fans in the mid-1990s, it appeared as though Hulk Hogan was out of vitamins, tired of exercising and all prayed out. Then WCW’s Bash at the Beach happened in 1996. During a six-man, tag-team match, Hogan stormed into the ring and helped The Outsiders Scott Hall and Kevin Nash by attacking Randy Savage and turning heel for the first time in more than a decade. The New World Order was formed and Hogan was once again a relevant figure in the wrestling world.
3. Melmac, sweet Melmac
Everyone’s favourite tiny, hairy TV alien (no, not Robin Williams) had an appetite for cats and could whistle without opening his mouth. After crashing on earth into the garbage cans of the Tanner family, Gordon Shumway — affectionately known as ALF — moved in with the lovely, suburban family, where he lived for several years. In the series finale, ALF was to be rescued by other survivors of his home planet but was instead captured by the American military, leaving the TV audience to determine what actually happened to the loveable alien. As far as the ADB (and this guy) is concerned, Gordon Shumay returned home safely and continues to terrorize little felines to this day.
2. The Terminator
And the No. 1 return of all time is …
1. Jesus.
