Ticket Speculation Law Now In Effect

If you’re planning on buying sporting event or concert tickets a new law is now in effect to ensure you aren’t overcharged, but critics argue to rule won’t keep prices down.

The Ontario government passed the Ticket Speculation Act earlier this month. The Liberals put forward the idea to stop Ticketmaster from selling and then reselling tickets to the same event.

Attorney General Chris Bentley said the rule was put in place to stop the U.S. company from putting tickets up for sale on its website and then redirecting customers to its resale site, TicketsNow, where the prices are higher.

Bentley insists the law doesn’t solely target Ticketmaster, but others as well.

The NDP supported the legislation, but MPP Peter Kormos said it won’t stop people from buying large blocks of tickets and then selling them on resale sites.

Progressive Conservative MPP Ted Chudleigh also claims the rule won’t lower ticket prices.
