Injury won’t keep Virtue, Moir from worlds

TORONTO — Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir say a recent injury setback won’t keep them from their quest for another world title.

Canada’s Olympic ice dance champions had their season debut cut short last week when they stopped during the free program at the Four Continents championships.

Virtue complained of tightness in her thigh, but says the injury isn’t related to her surgery last fall.

The two had been sidelined since Virtue had surgery in September on her lower legs to alleviate chronic pain.

They say they’ll be OK to compete at the world championships, March 21-27 in Tokyo.

Virtue, from London, Ont., and Moir, from Ilderton, Ont., are the defending world champions.

Quebec City to host figure skating’s ISU Grand Prix Final in December

OTTAWA — Quebec City has been chosen as host city for figure skating’s 2011 Grand Prix Final.

The competition is scheduled for Dec. 8-11 at the Pavillon de la Jeunesse at ExpoCite. It features the top six skaters in each discipline after six stops on the Grand Prix circuit.

“The ISU Grand Prix Final draws from the best in the world and with significant prize money at stake we can expect the competition to be fierce,” Skate Canada’s CEO William Thompson said in a release. “Quebec City is a beautiful location with a vibrant culture and I know the international skating community will be welcomed with open arms.”

The Grand Prix series stops in the U.S. (Skate America), Canada (Skate Canada International), China (Cup of China), France (Trophee Eric Bompard), Russia (Rostelecom Cup) and Japan (NHK Trophy).

Toronto’s Patrick Chan is the defending Grand Prix Final champion. He captured gold in Beijing last December.

A field of 84 skaters will compete in Quebec City, the second Canadian city to host the event — the 2001 Final was held in Kitchener, Ont.

The event also includes the 2011 ISU Junior Grand Prix Final, which features the top eight skaters in each discipline on the junior circuit.

Mississauga, Ont., will host this year’s Skate Canada International, Oct. 27-30 at the Hershey Centre.
