UFC parent company purchases Strikeforce

Zuffa, the parent company for Ultimate Fighting Championship, has purchased the organization’s biggest competitor, Strikeforce.

UFC president Dana White confirmed the deal in an interview with MMA Fighting and said that Strikeforce will continue to run under the same brand in the near future, with several events and fighters still under contract for the organization.

Strikeforce boasts several big-name fighters, some of the most recognizable being Fedor Emelianenko, Dan Henderson, Nick Diaz and Muhammed Lawal.

The purchase is just the latest move to further strengthen the UFC brand. Last year, the organization expanded its crop of fighters by adding lighter weight divisions through a WEC merger.

UFC, which has held several events in Canada between Montreal and Vancouver, will make its first foray into the Ontario market with a sold-out UFC 129 card at the Roges Centre in Toronto on April 30. Canadian Georges St-Pierre will defend his title against Jake Shields at that event.
