VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – It happens every three years. Hundreds of volunteers across Metro Vancouver get together for a 24-hour “homeless count.”
Those organizing it are hoping to gain some valuable information after more than 2,600 people were counted the last time around. It’s more than just trying to figure out how many people are homeless in Metro Vancouver.
Alice Sundbery is the co-chair of the regional committee that puts the event together. “We then use those numbers to help us to identify the kinds of programs and services that would be best to end homelessness.”
About 700 volunteers first check shelters, then go to local outreach programs and also take information from people they find who live on the streets. Sundbery says one of the alarming things from the last count was how many more homeless seniors there were.
