Mississauga power plant construction halted: Liberals

The Ontario Liberals have reached an agreement with Greenfield Power to stop construction of a gas-fired power plant in Mississauga.

Premier Dalton McGuinty vowed to scrap plans for the plant, located just west of Sherway Gardens, during the election campaign, but construction continued for about two months.

“The Ontario Power Authority notified me that Greenfield has agreed to stop construction immediately,” Ontario’s minister of energy Chris Bentley said in a statement Monday.

The plant will be relocated. Talks continue but a location hasn’t been determined.

Residents had argued the 280-megawatt plant would be too close to neighbouring homes, a large shopping mall, an ambulatory hospital and Etobicoke Creek,  and would pose health and safety risks.

Mayor Hazel McCallion had also opposed the power plant, but the Ontario Municipal Board ruled against the city. The OMB first approved the project in 2007.

It’s not yet known how much it would cost to relocate the power plant.
