Fire destroys abandoned Pickering farmhouse

Durham Police are calling a fire which gutted an abandoned Pickering farmhouse suspicious.

The fire broke out early Friday morning in the same home where a containment room meant to hold someone captive was discovered in the basement, in November.

“It doesn’t seem coincidental, but we can’t rule out either way. At this point, we’re not formally stating any of those answers yet, because we’re still in a very early stage with this preliminary investigation,” said Durham Sergeant Nancy Van Rooy.

The home had been slated for demolition when the containment room was discovered by contractors surveying the property.
