Island airport tunnel construction starts soon

Construction on a pedestrian tunnel linking the city to the island airport will start soon.
The Toronto Port Authority (TPA), the federal body that operates the Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport, said the project is in its final design stages and negotiations should wrap up in the next few weeks.
Reports said the groundbreaking ceremony would be held next month, but spokeswoman Suzanna Birchwood told CityNews the date would depend on negotiations and the weather.
She said the TPA is aiming for a spring start date, and the 240-metre tunnel will take more than two years to build.
The ferry will continue to operate when the tunnel opens.
Last year, the TPA announced it had chosen Forum Infrastructure Partners to design, build, finance and maintain the tunnel.
More than 1.5 million passengers travelled through the island airport last year.
