Crews begin to tear down fire-ravaged storage facility

A demolition crew has begun to tear down a storage facility in the Junction ravaged by a five-alarm blaze that took firefighters days to douse.
The demolition began at Save and Secure self-storage on Pelham Avenue and Osler Street, near Dupont and Dundas, at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday.
While officials haven’t yet confirmed the cause, there are reports there was a marijuana grow-operation inside the building.
The fire started around 6:15 a.m. on Jan. 9 and quickly escalated to five-alarm status. It took crews three days to put out the blaze and a nearby Catholic elementary school and some homes in the area were evacuated.
The cost of the damage is estimated at over $1 million.
