Gomez, Kostitsyn drama brewing in Montreal

Despite the Canadiens’ recent on-ice success, the drama won’t stop brewing in Montreal.

Following the Canadiens morning skate on Wednesday, head coach Randy Cunneyworth announced that forwards Scott Gomez and Andrei Kostitsyn would be game-time decisions.

Though the club is 4-1 in their last five games, Gomez’s and Kostitsyn’s struggles this season have been well documented and their frustrations have surfaced recently.

On Tuesday, Gomez was involved in an argument with assistant coach Randy Ladouceur over a drill at practice, while Kostitsyn told reporters Wednesday that he wants more ice time.

When asked if he has or will request a trade, the Belarusian said, “we’ll see what happens in the next few games.”

Kostitsyn makes over $3 million per season and Gomez is the team’s highest-paid player — with a cap hit of over $7 million per season — but Cunneyworth said how much a player earns never factors into his decisions.

The Canadiens host the Northeast Division-leading Boston Bruins Wednesday as they look to bounce back from a 5-3 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes Monday.
