The Toronto Taxpayers Coalition is throwing its support behind Mayor Rob Ford’s transit plan.
The group’s Save The Subways campaign was the topic of debate as Rob Ford and his brother Doug Ford launched their weekly radio talk show on Sunday.
“I want to do what I was elected to do and that’s build subways,” Rob Ford said on The City on Newstalk 1010.
“Obviously I’ve stopped the gravy train,” he told a caller.
“Not even close,” she responded.
Save The Subways promotes Ford’s vision over light-rail transit. Ads will run on buses in Scarborough, Etobicoke and North York promoting an online petition.
“We’ve had over 3,000 signatures. Of course we’re petitioning [Premier Dalton McGuinty.] We want to have a free vote in the legislature so that the MPPs vote the way that that eir constituents want them to, which is in favour of subways, not LRTs,” Toronto Taxpayers Coalition spokesperson Matthew McGuire told CityNews.
The coalition is also asking for donations to pay for the ads.
Earlier this month, Ford and his allies lost a crucial transit battle when council voted 25-18 in favour of TTC chairwoman Karen Stintz’s proposal for light-rail transit, instead of a subway.
