CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Hamilton Tiger-Cats are in the market for a new kicker.
The CFL team lost veteran Justin Medlock to the Carolina Panthers on Wednesday. Medlock, 28, signed a three-year deal with the NFL team as a free agent.
To make room for Medlock, the Panthers released kicker Ani Kunalic. Medlock will battle veteran Olindo Mare, who signed a US$12-million, four-year contract after the lockout last summer.
If Medlock cracks the Panthers’ roster, he will reportedly earn the NFL minimum of $390,000 this year with base salaries of $480,000 and $570,000 set for 2013 and 2014.
Medlock enjoyed a solid 2011 season with Hamilton, making 49 of 55 field goals while also handling punting and kickoff duties.
Medlock was a fifth-round pick of the Kansas City Chiefs in 2007 and made one of two field-goal attempts as a rookie before being released. He spent the last three seasons in the CFL with Toronto, Edmonton and Hamilton.
