UNIONDALE, N.Y. — Evgeni Nabokov has truly taken to the New York Islanders.
One year after refusing to report to the team, the 36-year-old goaltender has signed a US$2.75-million, one-year deal that will keep him on Long Island through next season.
Nabokov was claimed on waivers by the Islanders last season after returning from Russia to sign a $570,000, one-year contract with the Detroit Red Wings.
After failing to report to New York at that time, he came to training camp this season to honour the contract and has been one of the team’s bright spots — posting a .912 save percentage, 2.56 goals-against average and a 17-18-3 record.
In the process, Nabokov has come to enjoy playing for the Islanders.
“I’m thrilled to commit to this team for next season,” he said in a statement. “We have a great group in the locker-room of young, talented players and we’re heading in the right direction. I’m excited to have the chance to help get this team back to the playoffs.”
