An acerbic comedy-drama about a former high-school teacher fresh from a mental institution has won the people’s choice award at the Toronto International Film Festival.
Silver Linings Playbook — directed by The Fighter’s David O. Russell and starring Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence and Robert De Niro — beat Ben Affleck’s Argo and Eran Riklis’ Zaytoun to claim the $15,000 prize.
It screens for free at the Ryerson Theatre at 6 p.m. Sunday and opens in theatres next month.
The two other people’s choice awards went to Artifact, a doc about actor-musician Jared Leto and his band, and Seven Psychopaths in the Midnight Madness category.
The international critics’ prizes went to Francois Ozon’s Dans la maison (In the House) and Mikael Marcimain’s Call Girl.
And sharing the prize for best Canadian first feature film were Brandon Cronenberg, son of David Cronenberg, for the chilling dystopian horror Aniviral and Jason Buxton for Blackbird.
“The prize this year has been split between Blackbird, for its authenticity and clear-eyed social conscience, and for its ambitious commentary and visual sophistication, Antiviral,” the jury said.
Cronenberg and Buxton will each receive $15,000.
Xavier Dolan won the best Canadian feature film award for Laurence Anyways, about a young bohemian couple whose relationship falls apart when the man confesses his belief he’s transgendered.
