SIU probes 1 of 2 shootings on CNE grounds

The province’s Special Investigations Unit is probing one of two shootings early Sunday morning on the CNE grounds.

Police, who were in the area at the time, said a fight started outside Muzik nightclub around 3 a.m. Two people were shot — One is in critical condition; the other is stable. A third person, who wasn’t shot but was hurt in the fight, was also treated in hospital.

Right after, a car allegedly fled.

The officers tried to stop the car, but when it continued on, they opened fire. The car then crashed into a snowbank on Dufferin Street, near Liberty.

Bullets had struck two of the three people in the car, and they were taken to St. Michael’s Hospital. It’s not yet clear how serious their injuries are.

Two police officers also had minor injuries.

A number of people are in custody.

An earlier report incorrectly said there were three shooting victims.

Any witnesses are asked to call the SIU’s lead investigator, Derrick Wide, at 416-622-1957.

The westbound lanes of the Gardiner Expressway have been closed from Spadina Ave. to Dufferin St.; the eastbound lanes were also shut down by police briefly Sunday evening.

The SIU is an arm’s length agency which investigates cases involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
