Greek Independence Day parade takes over the Danforth Sunday

TORONTO, Ont. – The Danforth will be awash with blue-and-white on Sunday, as the Greek community celebrates Independence Day with a parade.
“There’ll be some floats, there’ll be some marching bands,” said Nikona Georgakopoulos, the Vice President of the Greek Community of Toronto. “It takes about three months worth of planning.”
And even Premier Kathleen Wynne will be there.
“We just celebrate 1821, the independence of Greece,” Georgakopoulos told 680News. “Every Greek child knows what the 25th of March 1821 is all about. It’s enshrined – all the parents will tell them it’s enshrined in every Greek.”
It begins at Eastern Commerce Institute at 11 a.m., goes up to the Danforth and west toward Broadview, where it turns north, just west of Jackman Avenue, ending at 2:30 p.m.
Danforth will be shut down between Donlands and Broadview Avenues for the duration of the parade.
Thousands are expected to be in attendance.
