Toronto writer wins short story contest

The CBC short story contest is over and the grand prize winner is from Toronto.
The winner is Becky Blake, a fiction writer who has worked as a journalist, actor and playwright.
Her short story, ‘The Three Times Rule’ takes a look at one womans look at the dating world.
“It’s a story about a young woman who has a rule about how many times she sleeps with men,” Blake said. “It’s a rule she uses to protect herself from getting hurt.”
Blake wrote the story in her 20s as a rant lamenting a series of disasterous dates.
She re-wrote the story 12 years later adding a new perspective to past events.
“There’s always a period of going away from it and going back,” she said. “I call it looking for the heart of the piece and it’s just trying to uncover what inspired you to write it in the first place.”
Blake said it often takes her multiple years to get her stories just right.
As the grand prize winner, Blakes story will appear in enRoute magazine and she will get to spend two weeks in the Banff Centre, working on her upcoming novel.
