Amazon hopes to break from the pack with 3D-ready “Fire” smartphone

Amazon has unveiled its first smartphone.

It’s called the Amazon Fire and has a 4.7-inch screen and 13-megapixel camera.

Amazon’s CEO Jeff Bezos unveiled the $200 smartphone on Wednesday. The device is equipped with a 3D-capable screen and an ability to recognize music and TV shows.

Bezos, in a rare media appearance, demonstrated the device, showing off its the ability to shift perspectives depending on how the user tilts the screen.

The phone has a glass screen and a rubberized frame and is made for one-handed use and its screen has a super bright setting for outdoor use.

The smartphone joins Amazon’s “Fire” lineup of tablets and streaming devices. It represents the retail giant’s attempt to extend its dominance of online commerce into mobile phones, which are increasingly being used to buy items and view video.

The Wall Street Journal has reported that AT&T will be the exclusive carrier for the new phone in the U.S.

There is no word on when it will be available in Canada.
