The Toronto Sun is the latest Toronto-based daily newspaper to declare its support of John Tory in his bid to become the next mayor of the city, following the Globe and Mail editorial board’s endorsement on Friday.
In an editorial published on Sunday, the Sun said, “We believe John Tory … is the best candidate to get Toronto moving forward again, with everyone pulling in the same direction.
“Tory is a consensus builder, not a bully.
“He wants to bring Torontonians together, not drive them apart in never-ending political wars between the suburbs and the downtown core.”
The Globe had the following to say in its decision to back Tory: “The mayoral candidate who can return sanity to city politics, who can best negotiate with the provincial and federal governments, who is most likely to be able to make progress on transit and other major issues, and who can bring an end to the Ford brothers’ reign of error, is John Tory.”
Two other Toronto dailies, The Toronto Star and the National Post, have yet to endorse a mayoral candidate.
Meanwhile, as of Saturday, 124,798 people had cast ballots in the advance vote, well surpassing the record set four years ago.
In 2010, about 16,000 showed up during the entire six weekdays of advance voting and another 61,000 on the weekend.
There are approximately 1.6 million eligible voters in Toronto.
Advance polls closed at 7 p.m. Sunday.
