U.S. State Department issues travel alert

The U.S. State Department has issued a worldwide travel advisory during the holidays, warning Americans to be vigilant and take precautions following the attack in Australia.
The alert says that terrorist groups and those inspired by them can pose unpredictable threats in public venues.
It also says an analysis of past attacks and threat reporting strongly suggests that terrorists are focused on hotels, shopping areas, places of worship and schools.
On Sunday, a gunman took 17 people hostage at a Lindt Chocolate café. The siege ended 16 hours later in a barrage of gunfire that left two hostages and the Iranian-born gunman dead.
The U.S. travel alert lasts until March 19.
