A powerful tornado did touch down in York Region over the weekend, Environment Canada has confirmed.
The tornado was spotted between Sunset Beach and Port Bolster on Lake Simcoe on Saturday afternoon.
Meteorologists determined the storm was likely an EF1, with winds between 150 and 175 kilometres per hour.
Environment Canada says its survey team looked at damage to trees and buildings in the area and confirmed that it was the fifth tornado of the season.
Also, the agency says storm damage in Ashburn, north of Whitby, may have been caused by a tornado on Saturday. A conclusion will be forthcoming.
