Summer can now get underway with the opening of Toronto’s 59 outdoor pools and 100 wading pools.
The pools, which are free of charge, will remain open until Labour Day weekend, weather permitting.
“In a big city it’s hard for people to find places to get together, especially as more of us live in tall buildings,” Mayor John Tory said at the opening of the new Parkway Forest Outdoor Pool in North York.
“I live in a condo building downtown and I don’t see my neighbours all that often … but when you have a swimming pool, when you have a gym, when you have a park, that’s places where people get together
“The bigger the city gets, the more diverse it gets, the more important it is that we spend time together, especially in the summer just when it’s pleasant to be outside.”
Ninety-three splash pads are already open across the city.
