Two people killed in multi-vehicle crash on Highway 401

A fiery crash involving three vehicles, including a tractor trailer, has claimed the life of two people on Highway 401 near Cobourg.

The crash occurred around 10 p.m. on Thursday in the eastbound lanes near Ontario Street.

The eastbound tractor trailer collided with two other vehicles, resulting in a fire, Ontario provincial police said.

Police confirm to CityNews two people are dead and a third person has been transported to hospital. Their names have not been released.

As of Friday morning, the westbound lanes of the highway were open, but the eastbound lanes remained closed.

All eastbound lanes reopened around 3:30 p.m. Friday.
