Man killed in North York shooting was ‘intended target’: police

Police believe the man shot and killed outside a bowling alley in North York on Saturday night was the intended target of the shooting.

A second victim, a woman in her 20s, is believed to be an innocent bystander.

Police and paramedics responded to a call at Playtime Bowl and Entertainment on Samor Road near Dufferin Street and Lawrence Avenue just after 10 p.m.

Upon arrival, they found a man and a woman with apparent gunshot wounds.

The man was located inside the building and pronounced dead at the scene. The woman was found outside and taken to a trauma centre in life-threatening condition. She later succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead in hospital.

“People just started running like crazy, knocking things over,” an eyewitness tells CityNews of the chaotic scene inside the bowling alley. “I turned back and said ‘What’s going on, what’s going on’ and someone yelled ‘gunshots, gunshots’ and I just started running outside like everyone else.”

The male victim has been identified as 32-year-old Thanh Tien Ngo.

“Mr. Ngo was the intended target,” said Det. Rob Choe. “We believe Mr. Ngo was confronted. He was pursued, shot at, and I believe he was seeking shelter within the bowling alley itself.”

The female victim, 29-year-old Ruma Amar, was with her husband and sister at the time of the shooting and happened to be leaving the building when shots rang out. Investigators say she has no connection to the male victim and was not known to police.

Police believe there were two shooters and a third suspect in a getaway car, described as dark in colour.

The first suspect is described as male, wearing a blue hooded shirt and black shoes. The second suspect is described as male, wearing a black hooded shirt and black shoes with white soles. There is no description of the third suspect at this time.
