Wild turkey spotted at GTA bus stop ahead of Thanksgiving

A plump wild turkey with a great sense of timing was spotted hanging around a bus stop in Mississauga on Saturday, just two days before Thanksgiving.

Peel police responded to the area on Lakeshore Road West near Lorne Park around 9 a.m. and ended up calling in Mississauga Animal Services to help.

The workers guided the turkey to safety in a nearby ravine, but it re-emerged on the road about three hours later.

Local residents and professionals said they have seen the turkey in the neighbourhood since August.

“She likes to hang outside my office,” said dentist Joan Chin. “She made Instagram on Thursday because all my patients were coming in and one of them posted her (photo).

“She will come and visit us every day.”

Wild turkeys are common in the area, and animal control workers won’t intervene unless they wander into traffic.

“I spoke with the officer, and in his five years surveying the lakeshore he has never encountered any wild turkeys,” said Peel Const. Iryna Yasshnyk. “So it was definitely an adventure today.”
