The body of a man believed to be in his 50s has been recovered after a car plunged into the icy waters of Lake Ontario near the Billy Bishop Airport ferry docks.

The Police Marine Unit as well as fire crews were dispatched to the airport side of the island shortly after 7 a.m. Sunday. Rescue crews brought the man’s body to the surface more than five hours later.

Toronto Fire says according to witnesses on the scene the car went into the ferry channel at a high rate of speed before slipping beneath the water, some 20 feet from the shore.
