At least one explosion was heard by witnesses as a fire broke out at an auto repair shop in Scarborough overnight.
Emergency crews were called to Midland Avenue, north of Lawrence Avenue East, just before 4 a.m. on Thursday.
“There was considerable damage to the building when the explosion occurred, blowing out the roll up doors on the north side, and taking the whole south side of the first two units out and throwing them into the parking lot,” fire officials said.
“Right across the front … it’s actually lifted the roof right off the building.”
When fire crews arrived they found the sprinkler system holding the fire at bay.
It’s believed the explosion heard by witnesses was from a car that was inside the building. Fire officials said several other smaller explosions happened, which are presumed to be tires and perhaps a few paint cans.
Firefighters continue to work on extinguishing hot spots.
There has been no word on what could have caused the fire.
Police continue to investigate.
