Winnipeg police are asking for help in locating a 6-year-old girl, who was allegedly abducted by her mother from Michigan. They were last seen in Winnipeg, but could be in Ontario.
Police are investigating the alleged abduction Ayla Velic in conjunction with U.S. authorities. They have received authorization under the Hague Abduction Convention Application to take custody of the girl if she is found.
The Hague Abduction Convention is an international treaty that “provides a civil remedy to parents seeking the return of a child wrongfully removed or retained across international borders,” according to the U.S. State Department.
Investigators say 30-year-old Elmedina Velic was living in Clinton Township, Michigan with her daughter before travelling to Winnipeg earlier this year. However, they say the mother and daughter may be in Ontario.
They are believed to be driving a 2016 red Nissan Versa with a Michigan license plate.
There is no evidence to suggest there is a concern for Ayla’s safety.
Anyone with information is asked to contact police.
