A 33-year-old man is facing charges in connection to what York police are calling a “hate-motivated assault” in Newmarket.

Just after noon on Sunday, officers were called to the parking lot of a restaurant at Yonge Street and Dawson Manor Boulevard.

A 24-year-old man was sitting in his vehicle — which had a rainbow logo on it — in the parking lot, when police said another man drove by and yelled a homophobic slur at him.

The victim confronted the man in the drive-thru, at which point an altercation took place. The suspect allegedly hit him and broke his phone. The suspect then fled the area.

      The victim suffered minor injuries.

Umair Ahmad Qurashi, of East Gwillimbury, was arrested at his home a short time later. He has been charged with assault and mischief, and is due in court on Nov. 22.
