Ontario records lowest number of new COVID-19 cases in more than a month

Ontario has confirmed 346 new cases of novel coronavirus on Saturday, among the lowest total in more than a month.

The news comes just one day after the province recorded one of the highest number of COVID-19 cases, 477.

The province says it completed just over 19,000 tests in the last 24 hour period.

Another 59 people have died as a result of coronavirus, bringing the provincial total up to 1,599. Of those deaths, 775 were in long-term care facilities, according to Public Health Ontario.

There have been 237 outbreaks reported in long-term care homes, an increase of three from the previous report.

Confirmed cases now sit at just under 20,000 with 72.1 per cent of those considered resolved.

Just over 36 per cent of all cases are due to community spread while 22 per cent is due to close contact with an infected patient.

The number of people in the hospital, on ventilators, and in intensive care also dropped since Friday’s report.

• 7,251 reported cases, including 5,024 recovered cases
• Of the cases, 6,557 are confirmed and 694 are probable
• 424 people are in the hospital with COVID-19, with 104 in intensive care units
• 567 people have died of COVID-19
