It was a close call in Oakville on Wednesday evening — where a young man came within an inch of being killed by a passing train.
“One more step and he would have been dead.”
That’s what police are saying about a 22-year-old man who escaped with serious injuries when he crossed the railway tracks in front of a speeding GO train.
Halton police tell CityNews the man was walking north on Fourth Line, north of Speers Road, around 5:50 p.m.
When he crossed the tracks at the level crossing, the speeding train struck his backpack lifting him several metres off his feet and flying through the air. Police say his backpack was torn off and he was found further along the tracks.
He was wearing ear buds and could not hear the approaching GO train or the warning bells — police estimate the train was travelling east at approximately 100 km/h.
The man was taken to hospital with serious injuries and is expected to fully recover.
Police are reminding pedestrians to remove headphones or ear buds when they approach any railway crossing.
The investigation near Bronte GO station caused significant delays on the Lakeshore West line on Wednesday evening. Train service had resumed to all stations for the Thursday morning commute.
