Ontario reports fewer than 400 new COVID-19 cases

Ontario is reporting 356 new COVID-19 cases and four additional deaths on Saturday as the seven-day average of daily cases continues to slowly decline.

Of the new infections, 230 are in individuals who are not fully vaccinated or have an unknown vaccination status, 126 are in fully vaccinated individuals.

The province is reporting 20 fewer new daily cases than they reported one week ago.

The rolling seven-day average falls slightly to 353 cases, reaching the lowest point since Aug. 11. The average is down 36 cases from one week ago.

There were 26,767 tests completed in the last 24-hour period for a test positivity rate of 1.4 per cent.

There are 132 COVID patients in the ICU across the province, an increase of two from the previous day. Among individuals in the ICU, 119 are not fully vaccinated or have an unknown vaccination status and 13 are fully vaccinated.

The province administered around 22,000 vaccine doses in the last 24-hour period. There are now 88.1 per cent of Ontarians 12 and older who have received at least one dose, nearly 84.4 per cent are now fully vaccinated.

Health Minister Christine Elliott advised that Ontario will release their plan on rolling out COVID-19 booster shots next week.

“We intend to release our plan that will provide information to all Ontarians on when they can expect to receive a third dose of the COVID-19 vaccine,” said Elliott in a tweet.

This comes after NACI released more guidance to provinces and territories on third doses. The committee says booster shots of an mRNA vaccine may be offered to people who received two doses of the Oxford-AstraZeneca shot.

Ontario’s COVID-19 science advisory table outlined recommendations for a successful youth vaccination campaign — in the event vaccines get approved for children aged 5 to 11 — on what they say is evidence-based data from previous childhood vaccination programs.

The science table says school-based vaccinations would be the best approach, linked with a strong endorsement from trusted healthcare providers.
