Ontarians split down the middle on Ford’s leadership of province: Survey

Ontario Premier Doug Ford is a polarizing public figure.

In fact, a new poll finds that Ontarians are evenly split when it comes to their opinions on how Ford is leading the province.

The results of a Maru Public Opinion survey released Friday found that 50 per cent believe Ford has the province headed in the right direction, with an equal 50 per cent saying he’s leading Ontario down the wrong path.

The survey comes at a time of magnified public scrutiny as Ford tries to navigate the province through a COVID-19 pandemic that’s seen Ontarians frequently clash over vaccines and public health policies.

Here’s how the numbers break down:

The most likely to believe the Ford government has the province headed in the right direction are from:

  • The GTA – 54 per cent
  • Eastern Ontario – 53 per cent

The most likely to believe the Ford government has the province headed in the wrong direction are from:

  • Hamilton/Niagara – 57 per cent
  • Northern Ontario – 56 per cent
  • Southwestern Ontario – 54 per cent

Who thinks Ford is leading Ontario in the right direction?

  • Men – 55 per cent
  • Older Ontarians 55+ – 54 per cent
  • Highest wage earners $100,000+ – 58 per cent
  • Highest educated – 54 per cent

Who thinks Ford is leading Ontario in the wrong direction?

  • Women – 54 per cent
  • Middle-aged 35-54 – 53 per cent
  • Lowest income earners/less than $50,000 per year – 55 per cent
  • Those with immediate post-secondary education / College/tech school – 52 per cent

*Maru says the survey of 1280 randomly selection Ontarians was taken between Nov. 19-23, 2021, with an estimated margin of error of +/- 2.6%, 19 times out of 20.
