Rapid antigen tests are finally being endorsed for use in Ontario's schools. Adrian Ghobrial tries to answer one simple question, why has it taken so long?

Ontario’s rolling seven-day average of new COVID-19 cases continues to rise as the provincial government posts yet another daily high not seen in several months.

According to data released Friday morning, there were 1,453 new cases across Ontario — edging out the May 24 daily total of 1,446. The day before saw 1,290 new confirmed infections. With the cases posted on Friday, the new seven-day average of cases is 1,115 — up from 1,054 on Thursday.

The government also advised 11 more people have died of the virus, bringing the total to 10,065.

There were also 910 cases deemed resolved on Friday, elevating the cumulative total to 609,806. There have been 629,064 confirmed COVID-19 cases to date in Ontario.

Despite the increases in cases and test positivity, there were no new hospitalizations. In total, there are 309 patients testing positive for COVID-19 in Ontario’s hospitals.

There are 151 patients in provincial intensive care units — down by four compared to Thursday’s reporting — and 90 of those people are on ventilators. According to the data, around 74 per cent of the patients in ICUs are either unvaccinated or partially vaccinated.

When it came to vaccinations on Thursday, 75,093 first, second and third doses were administered. Currently, 87 per cent of Ontario residents 12 and older have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 while three per cent are partially vaccinated and 10 per cent are unvaccinated. For children between five and 11, the newest age group eligible for vaccination, 270,059 first doses have been administered to date — representing 25 per cent of the total eligible population.

With respect to COVID-19 testing, the government reported processing 39,941 tests within the most recent 24-hour period. Although the volume of tests is slightly less than the 40,242 tests reported on Thursday, the daily test positivity rate jumped to 4.4 per cent — up from 3.5 per cent.

The latest COVID case numbers came ahead of a 2 p.m. announcement when Ontario government officials are expected to announce a plan to extend the usage of vaccine certificates in many indoor public settings. CityNews will carry that announcement live.
