Freezing rain warning in effect for Toronto and GTA

A freezing rain warning is in effect for Toronto, the GTA and most of southern Ontario.

Environment Canada says periods of light freezing rain or freezing drizzle is expected Saturday night into early Sunday morning.

“Untreated surfaces like roads, walkways and parking lots may become icy and slippery,” the national weather service said in a statement. “Take extra care when walking or driving in affected areas.”

Temperatures are expected to rise above the freezing mark early Sunday morning, which should bring an end to the freezing rain.

The milder temperatures are expected to be short-lived with minus double digits set to return Sunday night.

CityNews meteorologist Carl Lam is forecasting a high of 2 on Sunday before things drop down to -10 in the evening with overnight wind chills feeling like -18.

A high of -9 is expected on Monday with a low of -19, wind chills making it feel like -27 overnight.

“It is going to be a very cold Monday across the GTA,” says Lam.

It will also be windy on Sunday with southwest winds gusting upwards of 50 km/h in some areas.
