Newmarket school closed, teen in custody after ‘Columbine 2.0’ threat

York Regional Police have arrested a young teenage student after a threat was made on social media against a Newmarket school.

The student has been accused of posting threats against Clearmeadow Public School on Facebook. Several parents flagged a Facebook post on Tuesday night that mentioned ‘Columbine 2.0’ and warned people not to attend the school on Wednesday.

The York Region District School Board says they became aware of the threat overnight and immediately notified police.

Police say no one has been injured and no weapons were found when the teen as arrested.

The elementary school, located near Mulock Drive and Yonge Street, decided to move to remote learning for the day as a precautionary measure. All bus routes providing service to the school have been cancelled.

“We have confirmed with York Regional Police that there is no threat to the school and regular operations will resume tomorrow,” reads a message from YRDSB. “There is also no cause for concern or additional safety measures beyond those already in place at other school locations.”

The school board says mental health clinicians and support resources will be made available to the school in the coming days.
