Vast majority of Americans support Biden’s decision to ban Russian oil: poll

The vast majority of Americans, 82 per cent, support U.S. President Joe Biden’s decision to ban the importation of Russian oil amid the ongoing invasion in Ukraine, according to a new poll.

The Maru Public Opinion poll found that those surveyed, over two-thirds, favoured Canada as one of the countries used to replace that oil, followed by Mexico, Venezuela and Saudi Arabia.

The ban was introduced last week as a part of the economic sanctions placed on Russia by the U.S. because of the war in Ukraine. Several other NATO countries have implemented similar sanctions on Russia.

The majority of Americans polled, 71 per cent, also support Biden using an executive order to restart the building of the Keystone XL pipeline that would bring oil from Alberta to refineries in Texas.

The pipeline was originally rejected by former President Barack Obama, but was approved when Donald Trump was elected president. It was subsequently terminated again by Biden when he came into power.

Some 200 kilometres of pipeline had already been laid as of June 2021, including across the Canada-U.S. border. The Keystone XL project was first approved by the National Energy Board in 2007.

If Biden allows the pipeline to be built, it could be completed by the first quarter of 2023.

The survey was conducted on March 10 using 1,508 randomly selected American adults who are Maru Springboard America online panelists and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.q per cent, 19 times out of 20.
