Brampton man facing 11 charges in violent attempted carjacking

A 27-year-old Brampton man is facing 11 charges in connection with a violent attempted carjacking.

Peel police say a woman and her two grandchildren, ages 7 and 8, were sitting inside a car in the area of Rathmore Street and Calderstone Road on Wednesday night when a man entered the vehicle brandishing a firearm and demanded her belongings.

The woman refused his demands and continued to drive, eventually breaking free from the suspect.

Police say no property was taken and no one was physically harmed.

The suspect, Ibrahim Ahmed Abdi, 27, of Brampton, was arrested on Thursday and according to police was in possession of a loaded .40 Caliber hand gun.

Among the charges he is facing is robbery, three counts of forcible confinement, and pointing a firearm.

Police are asking for any witnesses or anyone who may have dashcam or surveillance footage in the area between 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. on the night of the incident to contact them.
