Man facing charges in e-bike hit-and-run was driving stolen car: Police

A man has been arrested in connection with a hit-and-run on Wednesday. The victim was driving an e-bike at the time and police say the suspect vehicle was actually stolen.

The suspect arrested in a North York hit-and-run that left an e-bike rider with critical injuries was driving a stolen vehicle, according to Toronto police.

Toronto police were called to Toro Road and Keele Street, just south of Finch Avenue, around 11:30 p.m. on Wednesday following reports that someone had been hit by a car.

Police tell CityNews the 41-year-old man riding the e-bike was in a curb lane on northbound Keele when he was struck from behind by a car. He was unconscious and not moving when observed by police.

Toronto Paramedics rushed the victim to a trauma centre with life-threatening injuries. Police say the e-bike was destroyed in the crash.

The driver fled the scene.

On Thursday, police arrested 21-year-old Anujan Suthaharan of Brampton when he turned himself in to 31 Division. He’s charged with dangerous operation causing bodily harm and leaving the scene of an accident.

It is alleged he was driving a stolen car at the time of the incident. Police tell CityNews the vehicle was stolen from an apartment building in the area of Islington Avenue and Steeles Avenue.

Suthaharan will appear in court on Friday.
