Toronto street to be named in honour of Raptors great Kyle Lowry

By Lucas Casaletto

A Kyle Lowry statue will, someday, stand somewhere in Toronto. For now, the greatest Toronto Raptor of all time is being honoured in the form of a new road.

“Kyle Lowry Road” is among the many new streets coming to Don Mills Crossing in North York — a 60-acre site that will become a community featuring residential, office, and retail buildings, parks and open spaces.

Coun. Denzil Minnan-Wong says this will be the largest community centre in Toronto.

“The new street names honour individuals who have lived in the community and made significant contributions through their life’s work — and one non-resident who gained Toronto’s admiration and respect for his role in winning a major league championship for the city,” Minnan-Wong said.

In addition to Lowry being honoured, the seven other new street names are Mike Palmateer Road, Steve Podborski Road, Moriyama Drive, D’Angelo Way, Marjorie Hiley Road, Quarrington Lane and Champions Road.

Palmateer is a Toronto native and former Maple Leafs goalie. He played seven combined seasons with the blue and white. Podborski is a former World Cup and Olympic downhill ski racer. He won a bronze medal for Canada at the 1980 Olympics in Lake Placid.

A ceremony will be held on Monday, and many of those being honoured will attend. It’s unclear if Lowry will be present.

Lowry is widely regarded as the greatest Raptor of all time. He played nine seasons in Toronto, winning his first and only NBA title in 2019. He’s currently a member of the Miami Heat.

Lowry is the Raptors’ all-time leader in assists, steals, triple-doubles and three-pointers. He’s second in all-time games, minutes played, and points, among other statistical categories.
