Toronto brings back mobile Chip Truck with pop-up pet food banks

Toronto Animal Services (TAS) is gearing up to host its first mobile clinic since 2019 this week to help residents keep their furry family members safe.

On Wednesday, June 29 at Jane Finch Mall between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m., the mobile Chip Truck will provide low-cost microchips, rabies vaccines, and pet licensing on a first come, first serve basis.

A TAS veterinarian will be on site at the pop-up to administer rabies vaccines and to insert microchips to pets. The City also added it partnered up with Petzlove Pet Food to provide free cat and dog food at these events this year with purchase of a valid pet licence, and while supplies last.

“TAS shelters received more than 1,700 lost pets in 2021. Residents should ensure their address and contact information associated with their microchip and pet licence is up to date to make it easier to reunite them with their pets should they get lost,” the City wrote in a release.

“A registered microchip gives owners the best chance to find their pet if they run away or become lost,” TAS added, “Animal shelter staff, veterinarians and animal control officers routinely look for microchips to return lost pets to their owners quickly. Microchips are also placed in all cats, dogs and rabbits that are adopted through the City’s shelters.”

For each cat, the cost of a microchip and rabies vaccine is $15, and $25 for each dog, and pet owners who have an existing valid City pet licence pay $10 for a microchip and/or a rabies vaccine. Depending on proof of income, TAS said owners can apply to qualify for reduced or waived fees, they just need to bring a 2021 T4, Notice of Assessment, Ontario Disability Support Program or Ontario Works statement.

There’s no registration required for the pop-up, but owners are being asked to bring a photo I.D., and dogs are required to be on leash and cats must be in a pet carrier, TAS said about Chip Truck events.

The City is reminding pet owners they must have a licence for their cats and dogs, which needs to be renewed each year.
