Toronto police say phone scammers are impersonating officers to bilk elderly victims

Toronto police are warning the public about phone scammers who are impersonating officers in a bid to bilk unsuspecting victims of cash.

Police believe the perpetrators are targeting elderly people.

“There have been several instances over the last few weeks where members of the public have received telephone calls from individuals who identify themselves as police officers,” police explained in a release Thursday.

After identifying themselves as police officers, the suspect then tell the residents that their home is being targeted by criminals who have been surveilling them and are planning a robbery.

“The suspect persuades the resident to hand over cash to them for safekeeping,” police explained.
