A young man is facing charges after his car ended up in a tree when he crashed through a barrier on the Gardiner Expressway in Etobicoke.

Police tell CityNews a car with two occupants was passing other vehicles at a high rate of speed on the shoulder of the highway around 9:15 p.m. on Wednesday.

The driver of the speeding car lost control near Grand Avenue and crashed through a guardrail and a fence before flying through the air and landing in a tree. Police say the vehicle likely would have crashed into a condo building had it not got stuck in the tree.

The driver was able to get out of the car but the male passenger was trapped and fire crews assisted with recovery efforts. Both men were taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The 22-year-old driver is facing charges.

The westbound Gardiner was closed at South Kingsway for the investigation and cleanup but all lanes have since reopened.
