Some Instagram users report inexplicable account suspensions, company ‘looking into it’

Many Instagram users reported that their accounts were inexplicably suspended on Monday and their efforts to have them verified and recovered have failed.

No reason for the technical issues have been provided by the company, but some users feared they were hacked, saying after going through the verification process their recovery emails were changed.

Some said they received a message saying their accounts violated Instagram’s community guidelines.

Instagram’s Public Relations team tweeted that it is aware of the issue but didn’t provide details. “We’re looking into it and apologize for the the inconvenience,” it said.

The company has not clarified if anything nefarious has taken place.

Instagram is owned by Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta, after it was acquired in 2012 for U.S. $1 billion in cash and stock. At the time Meta was known as Facebook Inc. — changing its name to Meta in 2021.
