6 teens arrested in Markham carjacking; 6 stolen vehicles recovered: police

Police in York Region have charged six people under the age of 18 and recovered six stolen vehicles following an armed carjacking in Markham earlier this month.

Officers were called to a parking lot on Enterprise Boulevard near Birchmount Road around 1:15 a.m. on July 13.

Police say two people had gotten into their Mercedes CLA45 when they were blocked in from behind by a white Hyundai Elantra.

Two males got out of the Elantra, approached the two people in the Mercedes and allegedly demanded their vehicle, phones, and wallets. Police say one suspect was armed with a gun and the other indicated he was armed.

The two suspects got into the Mercedes and drove away, while other suspects in the Elantra fled the scene.

No injuries were reported.

Police identified several suspects through their investigation, and along with officers from Peel Regional Police and the Toronto Police Service, executed search warrants at several residences in Toronto on July 27.

Police recovered six stolen vehicles, including the white Hyundai Elantra used in the Markham incident. Investigators allege the vehicle was stolen during a home invasion and robbery in Peel Region earlier this month.

Investigators also found a loaded Glock handgun in the bedroom of a 17-year-old suspect.

The following suspects were arrested:

Joemar Derby, 18, of Toronto, was charged with robbery with a firearm and possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000. Police say he was prohibited from possessing firearms at the time of these offences.

Akinbowale Monday, 18, of Toronto, was charged with robbery with a firearm, possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000 and failing to comply with a judicial release order. Police say he was already on bail for unrelated charges at the time of these offences.

Yahye Mahamed, 18, of Toronto, was charged with robbery with a firearm and possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000. Police say he was already on bail for unrelated charges at the time of these offences.

A male youth, 17, of Toronto, was charged with possession of a loaded restricted/prohibited weapon and two counts of failing to comply with a judicial release order. He was already on bail for unrelated charges and was prohibited from possessing weapons, at the time of these offences.

A male youth, 17, of Toronto, was charged with robbery with a firearm and possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000.

A male youth, 15, of Toronto, was charged with possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000.

The latter three suspects cannot be identified under the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
