Man facing up to 20 charges in Brampton hit-and-run crash that left 6 injured, including 2 children

Peel police say a 40-year-old man responsible for a violent hit-and-run crash that sent six people to hospital earlier this month was under a province-wide driving ban.

Gurpreet Hehar is facing almost 20 charges in connection with the crash that left a woman and two children with life-altering injuries after the stolen black pickup truck he was driving plowed into a number of vehicles at a high rate of speed at the intersection of Airport Road and Clark Boulevard just before 7:30 p.m. on August 3.

Hehar then got out of the truck and limped away on foot before police arrived.

Six people were taken to hospital with injuries, including a woman and two children under the age of 10, and three men. A dog that was in the same car as the woman and kids was killed in the crash.

Police have charged Hehar with four counts of dangerous operation causing bodily harm, four counts of failing to remain causing bodily harm, two counts of dangerous operation, two counts of failing to remain, possession of property obtained by crime and five counts of operating a vehicle while prohibited.

Investigators point out that Hehar was under a province-wide driving ban when the accident occurred. Among his past convictions are ones for dangerous driving, fleeing police while being pursued, possession of stolen property and impaired driving.

“Although this started with what is seen as a property crime, with a vehicle being stolen; it led to this gravely unfortunate situation that has altered the lives and well-being of a family in our community”, said Inspector Wendy Sims of Road Safety Services. “The absolute disregard for the law threatened the life of every person on that road. Our Safer Roads Team is dedicated to proactively address dangerous drivers and repeat offenders in efforts to keep our roads safe.”
